Book Review: Through Her Mother's Eyes - Norhafsah Hamid
Through Mawar Mother's Eyes, Idris Falls in Love with Her.
As we know, all of Norhafsah Hamid's books are related to Islamic theme and that is good. As a Muslim we need to understand what is right and wrong and act accordingly. For example, Islam forbids casual relationships, but allows taaruf before marriage.
This book begins with Mawar's life alongside her five Mafia Aunties including her mother and her bestfriend, Chempaka and Kiambang. All these woman have diverse backgrounds that shaped them into who they are today.
The story follows Mawar, who refuses to marry someone because she never had a father fugure since childhood due to her parents' divorce. I like how the author, Norhafsah Hamid, potrays Mawar as a woman who, despite not receiving a father's love, grows to be independent and good instead of going down a destructive path as often illustrated in today's world.
While reading this book, I really wished that I had a circle like Mafia Aunties. They even created a book club where all members review boks and characters together. I wish someone would invite me to join a book club like that!
I cannot deny that, I love everything about Idris except his ponytail!
I love how Idris asked Mawar's mother's permission before he began taaruf with Mawar.
I also love Idris's character, he is a doctor, yet still finds time to read books and be an active member of the Mafia Aunties' Book Club.
Idris once said to Mawar,
"From the moment that I knew you through your mother's eyes, I felt strongly that you are the one for me. When I finally saw you in person, you had captured my heart."
Someone please say that, Idris is truly a green flag character!
But, I do not really like Mawar. To me, she do not give a try to get to know Idris through taaruf before rejecting his proposal. She does not seem mature or brave enoigh to explore new things in her life or move on from her past, especially her parents' divorce. I know that is the memories that triggered her but at least she have to give a try.
Not all the men are the same.
As said in the movie Manisnya Cinta di Cappadocia, 'perkahwinan adalah satu perjudian.' This statement just about metaphore not the actual gambling.
Overall, Through Her Mother Eyes, I rate it 9/10.
Btw, I got a bookmark whenI went to PBAKL 2025 and met Norhafsah Hamid in real life!
